Usb hub: for the fast paced users
The invention of the usb hub has really made using the computer and accessing files easier for those who store files using USB devices. This will automatically make several usb ports open for hook up. A usb hub usually looks like a small box that can support as much as 8 usb ports which can be connected to the laptop or desktop computer's main usb port. A usb cable connected can be used to connect the hub to the main port. Anyone using a usb hub can check digital cameras, multi media players and other files at the same time without the need to disconnect and connect one device after another.
A typical usb hub generally has two types, the first one is known as the self-powered usb hub which can be connected directly to the main usb port without any electricity. This is the most common type and can be purchased at almost every computer store everywhere. The self-powered usb hub is also easy on the budget because there are generic ones that are being produced and sold in the market. Before purchasing one, it is important to check the device and look for any type of damage, another thing is to check all ports if they are all working properly. Some low grade usb hubs have port defects, so it's best to check each one to have the unit easily replaced.
The second type is called the AC powered usb hub which needs to be connected to an electrical outlet before it can be used. This works best for high powered gadgets or devices like scanners, printers or external drives. This type of usb hub is more expensive and is usually made with sturdier materials. When buying an AC powered usb hub, it's important to conduct a research about it and see if it has a reputation to overheat.
Usb hubs are available in any size and shape, some are even in the shape of certain characters, and some have themes while others are just plain. These are very compact and easy to store inside a bag pocket or a small purse. The speed of the usb hub is also something to consider before getting one. The 1.1 usb hub is the standard, perfect for regular data transfers and access, but if the transfers require a faster speed, the newest speed is the 2.2.
The usb hub can be very beneficial to those in need of multiple data access and transfers. It gives people the accessibility and flexibility that most cannot get from just using the main usb ports. Aside from that, the gadget is fast and efficient, perfect for people who live their lives in a fast paced environment.

I want to assign a comport to each of the ports on an external USB hub?
I have 3 devices that need com ports to work, so I use a usb-to-serial adapter for each. They work fine on the 2 built-in usb ports on my laptop. I now have a 4-port usb hub connected to one of the laptop ports. I want to be able to assign a com port to each of the 4 ports on the usb hub. Thanks, Bob
Not possible. A hub is a "dumb device" in that all it does is basically split the signal (like a splitter on your cable tv connection). It doesn't have the capability to determine what signal goes where. The only thing I could suggest is a USB router. It has the ability to do that.
