i just bought a gigabit switch. i have a pc that supports gigabit connection also i have a NAS which supports gigabit connection. my router DOES NOT support gigagit connection.

so my pc and the NAS is connected to the gigabit switch as also my router to allow me to connect to the internet. my question is why does my network shows that it has 100mbps connection instead of 1Gbs connection
do i need tweak something on my vista or its because the router does not support gigabit connection so it downgrades the whole network to 100Mbps?

The "Gigabit switch" may be switching to 100MB because you are plugging in a device that does not support a Gigabit connection. That is not uncommon in low end switches. If you tell us what make and model your switch is that might help. Most of the "consumer grade" switches that you find at best buy and office depot (and their equivalents) have only a single "switch" and it negotiates the entire switch to the speed of the slowest connected device. Managed switches typically have a switch for each port and buffering in the backplane to allow communication buffering between the different speed connections.
If you have a managed switch you should be able to connect to the switch and view the configuration on each port individually. Most ports and network cards are set to "auto select" the port speed and duplex settings. This does not always work correctly and if possible you can set both ends manually.
I certainly agree that you need cat-6 cables for any gigabit connection. Unless there is printing on the side of the cable that specifically states that it is cat-6 i don't know any way to visually check. only a cat-6 cable tester can verify that (and i don't mean a simple/cheap continuity tester, i mean one that actually injects a signal across the wire to test the data rates across the cable)
You may need a better Gigabit Switch. I use "Extreme Network" switches at work and a 3COM 4210 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=1285533 at home. Both give me Gigabit connectivity between all my Gigabit devices. I have a print server that is only 10MB and a wifi router that is 100MB and both of those connect at the proper speed without affecting the other ports.
