How is dual core CPU speed determined?
How is the speed of a Core 2 duo (and quad-core, six-core, etc) measured? If I have a 2.16 GHz core 2 duo processor, is that faster than a 2.4Ghz single core processor?
If a CPU has 2 cores each running at 2.16GHz does that give the CPU a total of 4.32GHz? Or are their combined speed 2.16GHz? Or does the GHz of a CPU and the number of cores have no direct correlation at all?
The speed of a CPU is determined by it's GHz. If you have a 2.16 GHz CPU, it's a 2.16GHz CPU with how ever many cores, each running at 2.16 GHz.
Is one faster than the other? That depends on what you're using it for. If the program(s) you use are multi-threaded or you run many programs at one time, then more cores will provide a greater benefit and a dual core will be faster than a single core at the same speed. However, if you have a slower dual core and a faster single core and you only run one program at a time and/or the program is not multi-threaded, the single core processor will be faster, since it's clocked higher.
However, the GHz rating is only valid as a method of comparison across the same architecture of a given CPU line. For example, you can't compare the speed of a dual core AMD chip to a dual core Intel chip, since even if they run at the same speed one may (and likely will be) significantly faster than the other. You also should not compare the speed of say an Intel Core i7 quad core CPU to a Quad Core 2 chip from Intel, since even if they run at the same clock speed, the i7 is going to be faster.
